George R. Davis

WILMINGTON - George R. Davis, 86, a resident of Haynes Road, died Saturday, November 20, at Albany Medical Center.
A lifelong resident, George was born in Wilmington on September 18, 1935, the son of the late Lawrence F. and Annette (Howard) Davis, and attended Wilmington schools. He married his wife Virginia Davidson Davis on April 26, 1958. George served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis and, upon discharge, came home and worked as a logger. He spent his early days building trails at Mount Snow and most of his working life was spent working for Haynes Brothers operating heavy equipment. He also worked for Vermont Barnboard as a log scaler and in the debarker room. He retired from groundskeeping at the White House of Wilmington.
George enjoyed hunting and loved running his tractor. He enjoyed being outdoors, collecting anything, especially vinegar cruets. He enjoyed listening to classic country and western music, working and attending horse draws - especially at the local fair - and spending time with his family.
George was preceded in death by his siblings Gene Davis, Bernice Sullivan, and Michael Davis. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Davidson Davis; his daughters Laurie Cole (Matthew), of Wilmington, and April Murray (Harold), of Norfolk, VA; grandchildren Christopher (Nicole), Aliza, Michael (Samantha), Lydia, and Saryn; and great-grandchildren Ella, Davis, Bailey, and Emersyn.
Graveside funeral services for George will be held Wednesday, November 24, at 11 am in Riverview Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.
