David Matthews

LYNN, MA - David Matthews, 84, of Lynn, died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 26, of a heart attack.
David was born in Queens, NY, to the late James and Roberta Matthews, and was raised in Long Beach, NY. He attended high school in Danbury, CT, class of 1955, and then attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, class of 1959, where he received a BA in economics. He served in the US Army Security Agency in Germany from 1960 to 1963, then was honorably discharged.
David taught German for a year at a high school in Grants Pass, OR, then attended Washington University in Seattle, WA, where he received a master’s degree in German language studies in 1968. From 1969 to 1970, he taught English in Tokyo, Japan.
David spent his working years as an artist; his passion was making pottery. He had his own studio, Cooperative Pottery Studio in Lynn from 1983 to 2015. He made over 1 million pieces. He was also a volunteer and advocate for people in need for the Tri-City community action program in Malden. David loved to travel and visited over 45 countries, as well as spoke five languages. He loved tennis, swimming, reading, and writing.
David is survived by his wife of 36 years, Raquel Rocha Matthews. He was an exceptional and supportive husband who shared his knowledge of the written language, respect for Mother Nature, and passion to live a fulfilling life by focusing on being one’s authentic self. He focused on the positive in life and in others in the most humble and respectful way. His wife will miss him always but will continue to honor him by living life to the fullest, being open and honest, and believing in the best of people and herself. David is also survived by his sister Lynne Matthews; his brother Peter Matthews; and sisters-in-law, cousins, nephews, and nieces.
