Governor pens letter warning schools of budget shortfall, rep says lack of leadership to blame

MONTPELIER- In a letter issued on September 9, Gov. Phil Scott warned Vermont’s local school officials of a looming education budget shortfall, and asked them to contain local education costs, or face significant tax increases and possible failed budget votes. 
Gov. Scott said his administration was “taking the unusual step” of contacting boards before they start building their fiscal year 2026 budgets with a “commitment to collaboration” and to share information and offer technical assistance.
