“Story” quilt combines autobiography and magic

This quilt tells a story.

BRATTLEBORO - Brooks Memorial Library is hosting the rare exhibition of a quilt from the Woman on a Bridge series by distinguished artist and dedicated activist Faith Ringgold.
This powerful and stunning story quilt stitches together elements of autobiography, magical thinking, African-American history, and observations on social justice themes of prejudice and inequity into a fictional narrative. The text on the quilt was adapted for her picture book “Tar Beach,” which received multiple awards, including the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration, a Caldecott Honor medal, and New York Times Best Illustrated Book citation.
