Give back to the Green Mountain National Forest

PERU - Green Mountain National Forest employees are inviting members of the public to join them in celebrating National Public Lands Day, the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands on Saturday, September 24. Established in 1994 and held annually on the fourth Saturday in September, this event attracts thousands of volunteers to help restore and improve public lands around the country.
The Vermont event will be held on Saturday, September 24, from 9 am to 12:30 pm at Hapgood Pond Recreation Area. The day’s event will focus Forest Service staff and volunteers on removing woody vegetation to restore the scenic view at the popular recreation site as well as some work assembling new picnic tables. While the Forest Service will take the lead on work objectives and provide the needed tools for the day, participants are encouraged to bring appropriate footwear and gloves. Lunch and water will be provided.
This year the theme is “giving back together.” During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, America’s public lands acted as a safe haven for recreation, conversation, and the simple enjoyment of being outside the confines of people’s homes. In a time of disconnectedness and uncertainty, the outdoors brought people together and deepened appreciation for the important role these spaces play in people’s lives. Now it’s time to return the favor.
