In a few weeks, on Saturday, May 1, Wilmington and many other Deerfield Valley towns will participate in the 40th annual Vermont GreenUp Day. For 40 years, volunteers have turned out to help clean up our roadsides. We hope you will join us this year.
The purpose of designating the first Saturday in May each year as Green Up Day in Vermont is to raise awareness of the problems of roadside litter and to create an opportunity for a community wide effort to beautify each town by picking up litter. To learn more about Green Up Day, find out who are the coordinators in other towns, or donate to the cause go to www.greenupvermont.org.
Anyone who would like to volunteer in Wilmington should come sometime between 9:30 and 10:30 am on May 1 to Buzzy Towne Park. At that time, special Green Up trash bags will be given out and routes will be assigned. If you know of a group that would like to participate or if you have a special area in Wilmington that you would like to green-up, please notify one of us.
Any interested individual, group or family may also just show up at the designated time, rain or shine, and we’ll get you started. Sturdy shoes and work gloves are recommended. Elementary-age children should be accompanied by an adult at all times during activities.
All Wilmington volunteers are invited to take a break in their litter cleanup on May 1 between 11:30 am and 12:15 pm when free hot dogs and soda will be available at the Twin Valley High School cafeteria. We look forward to seeing you but even if you can’t participate on May 1, we appreciate any and all efforts to reduce roadside litter.
