Singer, banjoist, fiddler, and guitarist, Amidon glides through an unlikely set of genres, from traditional folk to free jazz, drawing on his experiences growing up a child of Brattleboro folk musicians Peter and Mary Alice Amidon, and his more recent work in NYC with the experimental indie-rock bands Doveman and Stars Like Fleas. His intuitive and often radical reworkings of age-old secular ballads, gospel, folk songs, and hymns render familiar characters new through his direction, vision, and collaboration with a roster of renowned musicians.
On the new release, Amidon works with old-time melodies and lyrics as a starting point for creating atmosphere. The album features three children’s singing games popularized by Georgia Sea Islands songstress Bessie Jones, recomposed by Amidon to expose maturity and unease.
Twenty-four-year-old singer/songwriter Morrison plays roots music on fingerstyle and flat-picked guitar, mandolin, clawhammer banjo, and lap slide guitar. His writing encompasses everything from punchy political commentaries to soul-warming serenades, and branches out into instrumental rags and fiddle tunes. Morrison’s latest CD is entitled “Old-Timey & New-Fangled.”
