BRATTLEBORO - Twilight Music presents an evening of folk, indie, and roots music with Vermont/NYC folksinger and multi-instrumentalist Sam Amidon, and New Mexico singer/songwriter Cahalen Morrison, at Hooker-Dunham Theater & Gallery on Sunday, April 11, at 7:30 pm. The concert celebrates the release of Amidon’s new CD, “I See the Sign.”

Singer, banjoist, fiddler, and guitarist, Amidon glides through an unlikely set of genres, from traditional folk to free jazz, drawing on his experiences growing up a child of Brattleboro folk musicians Peter and Mary Alice Amidon, and his more recent work in NYC with the experimental indie-rock bands Doveman and Stars Like Fleas. His intuitive and often radical reworkings of age-old secular ballads, gospel, folk songs, and hymns render familiar characters new through his direction, vision, and collaboration with a roster of renowned musicians.

On the new release, Amidon works with old-time melodies and lyrics as a starting point for creating atmosphere. The album features three children’s singing games popularized by Georgia Sea Islands songstress Bessie Jones, recomposed by Amidon to expose maturity and unease.

Twenty-four-year-old singer/songwriter Morrison plays roots music on fingerstyle and flat-picked guitar, mandolin, clawhammer banjo, and lap slide guitar. His writing encompasses everything from punchy political commentaries to soul-warming serenades, and branches out into instrumental rags and fiddle tunes. Morrison’s latest CD is entitled “Old-Timey & New-Fangled.”

Hooker-Dunham Theater & Gallery is located at 139 Main Street. Tickets for this concert are $15 general and $13 students and seniors. For ticket reservations and information call (802) 254-9276. For more information visit www.myspace.com/samamidon, www.cahalen.com or www.hookerdunham.org.
