The folks who don’t like the pergola have made their points about the process being flawed, the design not architecturally appropriate, and a bevy of other items. What they haven’t done is explained how they will dismantle the pergola, what will be left after it is removed, where the money will come from, and how much is available. We find this incredible. To say that it will be done regardless of cost, and shouldn’t be a concern to the voters of Wilmington, is cavalier to the point of recklessness, in our opinion.
Speaking of our opinion, this newspaper has been singled out for its support of the pergola. We influenced the process, it has been said, with our editorials and a satiric “April Fools” edition.
Guilty as charged. Opinion, after all, is what an editorial from a newspaper should provide. Take a position, based on the opinions of the writers and staff. That’s also why we offer space to letter writers of all opinions. We want a lively debate. We think it is healthy for the community to see all sides of an issue presented, including our own.
As for satire, it has long had its place in both popular and political culture. Satire often points out the absurdity of a position or action. Seriously, was our satiric poke at the Bank Park design any more outrageous that a book that looks at absurd uses for cats?
No, we haven’t wavered in our position. The pergola deserves to stay, and the argument over its position in the center of Wilmington needs to end. Vote “no” on article 2.
Note to readers and letter writers: Due to the large volume of letters received this week, we have held many letters that were not timely in regard to Town Meeting issues. They will be printed as time and space allow over the next few issues.
Contact our editorial department with any issues or concerns about unprinted letters.
