Academy skiers and riders ready for states

DOVER- Mount Snow Academy J4 alpine skiers (ages 11 and 12) participated in the last Southern Vermont Council race of the season, a giant slalom at Bromley, on Saturday, February 20. Eli Swing, of Brookline, placed second; Sam Cusick, of Fairfield, CT, third; and Richard Sherras, of W. Rupert, fourth.

Following that race, the rankings for the J4 skiers in the Southern Vermont Council were posted. Swing placed first among J4 men for the second year in a row, winning for himself an automatic spot at Future Stars in late March. The Future Stars program will bring together highly ranked J4 skiers from throughout the Eastern region to train and compete. Sherras placed fourth in the SVC rankings; Cusick placed fifth, Tommaso Auerbach, of Newton, MA, placed 13th, and Nick Paras, of the Mount Snow weekend competition program, was 16th. On March 13-14, they will all move on to compete in the J4 State Championships at Sugarbush, where they’ll challenge skiers from the Northern and Central Vermont councils.

Mount Snow Academy alpine racer Alva Swing placed fourth in Super G at the J3 (ages 13 and 14) state championships on Friday, February 12, at Stowe. The remainder of the state championship competitions will take place February 27 through March 1 at Killington, with giant slalom action on Saturday and Sunday, and the slalom races on Monday. Alva Swing, Andrew Sherras, and Sarah Reilly, of Stony Creek, CT, will represent MSA at the J3 state championships.

On Saturday, February 13, the J3s traveled to Magic Mountain for the last slalom in the Southern Vermont Series. Andrew Sherras placed sixth; Harrison Mullen, of Laurel Hollow, NY, eighth; and Alva Swing 15th among men; and Reilly 11th among women.

MSA snowboarder Noelle Edwards, of Stamford, CT, had a stellar day at Bromley on Friday, February 19. Edwards won the slalom and the giant slalom for Breaker Girls (ages 12 and 13), and laid down the fastest time of the day among all girls. Edwards has now qualified for both the Slalom, GS, an bordercross events at Nationals. On the men’s side, DJ Torroni, of Dover, placed third among Junior Men (ages 16 and 17) in both events.

On Sunday, there was more board action at Stratton. Noelle Edwards won the women’s slopestyle event among Breaker Girls. Among the men, Wyatt Mosher, of Killington, took first; Austin Schweyher, of Point Pleasant, NJ, took second; and Dillon Wilson, of Madison, CT, took fourth.

This coming weekend will be another busy and important one for the competitors.The snowboarders will be at Mount Snow for a slopestyle event on Saturday and the halfpipe on Sunday. The alpine J4s will be at Sugarbush on Friday for the J4 states super G event., and the J3s will head to Killington for the J3 state championships.
