Some may have seen the 1940 Hitchcock suspense-thriller movie based on this story, the only Hitchcock-directed film to receive an Academy Award.
“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again” is the opening line, and from there the unnamed narrator recollects her past, recalling the story of her transition into womanhood.
The plot overview starts with Maxim de Winter, still troubled by the death of his first wife Rebecca, falling in love with a shy lady’s companion. They get married and return to Manderley, his large country estate in Cornwall.
Upon their arrival at Manderley the new bride soon realizes how difficult it will be to lay to rest the memory of her husband’s first wife. Rebecca is understood to have drowned in a sailing accident off the coast next to the mansion a year before, but her memory has a strong hold on the estate and all of its inhabitants and visitors, especially its domineering housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers. She is one of literature’s most infamous female villains, who begins driving the young wife to madness.
The performance will be held in the TVHS Music Room on November 12, 13, and 14, at 8 pm, and on Sunday, November 15, at 2 pm. The cast promises an evening of suspense and thrills as this classic unfolds. Ticket prices are adults $5, students and seniors $4.
