On the agenda of the selectboard’s meeting on October 21, item six was to “see if the selectboard wants to take a position as to whether it does or does not support Article 1 on the November 10 town meeting warning related to an Australian ballot.”
By Vermont State Statute, the voters of Wilmington may call for an Australian ballot. A petition of 151 signatures, which is double the required amount, was submitted to the town for an Australian ballot.
The selectboard has chosen to snub 151 signatures because they feel the common voter is not informed enough to make a rational decision, without more public discussion. They want to have a floor vote, Town Meeting day, after public discussion on the matter of the pergola.
Personally I believe there has been ample discussion, articles, and information about this matter. It has been going on for over nine months. We need to bring this matter to a close and an Australian ballot will do that, at the March Town Meeting.
Remember, November 10 is the important meeting. This meeting will decide if we have an Australian ballot at the March Town Meeting.
