Dover’s financial administrator resigned her position, citing her discontent with “the way the town was being run,” and a Dover School Board member resigned in a flap over excess payments to two staff members.
15 years ago:
West Wardsboro residents were hopeful that a bridge on Route 100 would be rebuilt, and that the “S” curve in the road would be straightened after state workers were seen taking photographs of the bridge. One AOT official in Montpelier said the work was in “the very preliminary stages,” but another AOT representative said there were no plans to repair the bridge, and it probably wouldn’t be done during the 20th century. His prophesy proved accurate.
Stratton Mountain was sold to Intrawest Corporation, a Canadian company.
20 years ago:
An attempted burglary was foiled in East Dover when an alert resident called police to report a suspicious vehicle parked in a neighbor’s driveway. Police arrested a 17-year-old Jamaica resident in the incident.
Dover police eked out a victory over Wilmington police in a shooting match at the pistol range. Dover scored 93.85%, and Wilmington scored 93.52. The top score of the day was (then) Wilmington Police Sergeant Joe Szarejko, who shot 100%.
25 years ago:
In their proposed town plan, the Wilmington Planning Commission predicted that traffic problems would increase, particularly during peak tourist seasons. They urged the town to form a committee to coordinate a study with the state agency of transportation to develop long-term solutions. Commissioners also urged the town to take “serious” steps to alleviate the parking problem in the village.
35 years ago:
Richard Pratt, a former Montpelier Police Department lieutenant, was appointed as chief of Wilmington’s police department. Pratt said the “caliber of officers in the department is among the highest in the state.”
A fire in the kitchen at the Skyline Restaurant caused $20,000 in damage, but owner Dick Hamilton planned to have the restaurant up and running within the week.
The Deerfield Valley Chamber of Commerce wrote a letter to Ralph Nader asking “Nader’s Raiders” to investigate Green Mountain Power after the electric company raised electrical rates three times in less than a year.
40 years ago:
The Dover School Board released plans for the new elementary school. The building, designed by architect Rod Williams, of West Dover, featured six classrooms, and a large learning resource center. Williams’ design included an option for additional classrooms, a kindergarten area, and a community center/cafeteria that could be added in stages.
