Valley school board members vowed to push forward with plans for a study regarding a proposed Dover/Whitingham/Wilmington school district. Board members found themselves hobbled by statutes requiring a public vote in each town to authorize funds for the study, another vote in each town to approve a formal proposal. In addition, Dover said they’d only consider a school merger if it included grades K through 12, while Whitingham only wanted to discuss combining the middle and high school grades.

It was there that he saw the impact of a thousand years of civilization on the natural landscape. He said he vowed to “preserve the land, to keep it rich and forested, not to let it turn into a desert, eroded and empty, as I had seen on the road to Damascus.”

Construction began on Mount Snow Airport with the cutting of trees along the area that would become the airport runway. The airport and its 2,600-foot runway were designed to accommodate small private aircraft, and the location would allow a runway expansion of another 1,100 feet. Mount Snow Development Corporation said they built the airport to take advantage of a growing number of families seeking ski destinations in their own aircraft. Mount Snow also hoped to encourage a shuttle service to Mount Snow from major metropolitan areas.
