WILMINGTON- It was the Twin Valley softball team’s final game of the season and the Wildcats were determined to go out on top. It was also Senior Day for Katelyn Boyd, Molly Corse, Meg Jutras, Laura Gypson, Jess Bolognani, and Liz Degnon, and the game meant a lot to all of them.

The Arlington Eagles were the Wildcats’ last opponent and they kept pace with the Wildcats early in the game. With the score tied 2-2, the Wildcats jumped ahead of the Eagles with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Wildcats led, 5-2. Arlington came back, scoring two more runs to make it 5-4, but the Wildcats put the Eagles away for good with three runs in the third inning, one run in the fourth, and five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Arlington could only muster three more runs (two in the third inning and one in the sixth inning) as Boyd’s pitching was too much to handle. The Wildcats beat the Eagles in their final game of the season, 14-5.

Fives were wild for Ashley Lawless as she batted five for five with five RBIs and a double. She was followed by Shannon Lozito who went two for four with three RBIs; Corse went two for four with two RBIs and a home run; Bolognani went one for four with a double; Boyd went two for four with an RBI; Ashley Dix went one for three with an RBI; and Degnon went two for four with an RBI.

Boyd went the distance for the Wildcats. She fanned 10 batters and chalked up the final win of her career.

“The game started off slow, but they picked it up and it worked out well,” said Twin Valley softball coach Danny Birch. “We wanted to go 10-6, but we went 8-8. I’m happy with the overall outcome, it’s a better team than on paper and they have what it takes to win.”

The Wildcats now await their first opponent in the division III softball playdowns. Birch said the team will know by Monday who they’re playing. As for the seniors, Birch said he will miss them all. “They’re going to be missed. There’s a lot of talent there. I wish them success wherever they go. They’re a great bunch of kids,” said Birch.
