BETHEL, ME- Local skiers and snowboarders from Mount Snow Academy had a podium weekend at competitions in Vermont and Maine on January 31 and February 1.

Freestyle skiers enjoyed sunny skies and good conditions at the Eastern Free Ride Tour at Sunday River, a competition which draws skiers from around the eastern region. Devin Logan, 15, of West Dover, VT, took the top spot in slopestyle in an open field of teen and adult women. Logan won’t have time to rest on her laurels. She’s headed to the Aspen Open in Colorado, where many of the nation’s best will be competing this week.

On the men’s side of the Free Ride Tour, Jack Strain, of Montclair, NJ, and the Mount Snow Weekend program, took second. Mount Snow Academy student Travis Heyer, 17, of Amherst, MA, took ninth place and Jon Caplan, 14, of West Dover, VT took 28th in a field of 60 teen and adult slopestyle competitors. Next weekend the boys will be on their way to the Rosemary Bowl at Waterville Valley.

The weekend saw Mount Snow Academy snowboarders competing at home in the Southern Vermont Snowboard Series. DJ Torroni, 16, of West Dover, VT, took first in his age group in the slope style competition on Saturday, and then capped his weekend by capturing top honors in the halfpipe on Sunday. Karen Kobayashi, 13, of Rye, NY, took second in the half pipe and third in slop style in her age bracket, while teammate Noelle Edwards, 12, of Stamford, CT took second in slopestyle and fourth in the pipe. Next week, the boarders will travel to Okemo for more Southern Vermont Snowboard Series action.

Also in Vermont, the J4 (ages 11 and 12) alpine racers hit the slalom course at Magic Mountain in Londonderry. Eli Swing, of Brookline, VT, took second and Sam Cusick, of Fairfield, CT, took fourth for the boys. Sarah Reilly brought home a sixth for the girls.

Next weekend the J4s will be at Willard Mountain, in Greenwich, NY, for a night slalom. The J3s (ages 13 and 14) will face a Super G at Stratton on Monday, February 9. The Southern Vermont Council Series will culminate back at Magic Mountain on February 14, when the Southern Vermont team for the state championship competition will be named.
